The Juan Felipe Gómez Escobar Foundation in Cartagena Obtained the Silver LEED Certification

April 2016 - The Juan Felipe Gomez Escobar Foundation in Cartagena, also known as the Juanfe, obtained the Silver Leed certification this year, awarded by the USGBC in the United States. The headquarters building was able to meet the necessary sustainable features to be certified in the modality of ¨ Existing Buildings: Operations and Maintenance ¨. " When the social comlex was built - Home of our foundation in Cartagena - we thought that it was not consistent to build a project for the benefit of the most vulnerable without it being sustainable with the environment," as said by Catalina Escobar President and founder of the Juanfe foudation. " All human beings need of the environment to live and any social project that does not take this into account, will not generate a true social transformation," she enphasised.

In order to achieve the maximum energy efficiency of the building, improve occupant comfort and reduce the impacts of the building operations on the environment, AEI - Architecture E Interiores implemented several bioclimatic strategies. " The building has an architectural design that maximizes the use of natural light and ventilation, it has integrated pest control, connection to the public transportion system of the city, habitat protection and restoration thanks to green leaf areas and a comprehensive waste management system " said Marta Gallo AEI Managing Partner.

The various strategies implemented at the design and construction level in the building allowed a 38.57% reduction in drinking water consumption used in plumbing appliances; 92.23% reduction in the consumption of drinking water for landscaping, and the decrease of 68% in energy consumption when compared to buildings of the same type, which in turn gave it a score of 99/100 in the Energy Star.

According to the above, the building managed to meet several parameters set by the USGBC and completed 59 points by which it was awarded the Silver certification. The Juan Felipe Gomez Foundation is positioned as the first foundation in the country to be added to the list of more than 100 certified projects in Colombia.
